Objectives : The goal of this study was to evaluate clinical characteristics influencing on psychotic symptoms in admitted major depressive disorder (MDD) patients.
Method : The subjects (n=250) were major depressive disorder patients admitted to Chosun university hospital psychiatric ward from 2006 to 2013. They met DSM-IV-TR criteria for MDD and were classified into two groups, psychotic and non-psychotic depression based on the presence of delusion or hallucination. We compared two groups in clinical, sociodemographic characteristics and depressive symptom profiles, and applied logistic regression analysis to evaluate factors influencing on psychotic symptoms in MDD patients.
Results : Compared to non-psychotic depression, psychotic depression showed significantly high frequency in admission via emergency room, involuntary admission, longer length of stay, antipsychotic augmentation, psychomotor retardation, number of past suicide attempt and past admission. Psychotic depression was mainly associated with longer length of stay, past suicide attempt, past admission, diminished interest and psychomotor retardation.
Conclusion : Our findings suggest that various clinical factors are associated with psychotic symptoms in admitted MDD patients.
